Former Oxford striker Graham Atkinson dies at 73

Former Oxford striker Graham Atkinson has died at the age of 73, the club have announced.

Atkinson, the younger brother of former Manchester United and Aston Villa manager Ron, died from cancer on Thursday morning.

Atkinson began his career at Villa before joining Ron at the Manor Ground during the 1959-60 season. He went on to score the club's first ever goal in the Football League, against Barrow in 1962.

The forward would make 394 appearances for the U's and set an all-time scoring record of 107 goals for the club.

Former team-mate Ken Skeen told the club's official website: "He was a great man and a great footballer who I was proud to call my best mate, even after all these years.

"I am glad I came to Oxford and got the chance to know him. He was a true gentleman who was at the heart of Oxford United for many years and he will be missed by everyone."
